Earlier this year the Turkish Basketball Federation announced its 2012-2016 strategic plan ‘Project Powerhouse’. The strategic plan outlines the road map to solidifying Turkey’s position as a powerhouse in international basketball.
With a clear aim to win medals for both the men’s and women’s national teams and creating the strongest league in Europe, Turkish Basketball is taking all the steps necessary to create a flawless and integrated talent development path and secure sustainable sports success.
Following his re-election, Demirel said: “The Turkish Basketball Federation has reached an important milestone. Our objective the past 10 years was to build up basketball in Turkey and achieve success on the court. We are now one of the strongest basketball nations in the world and our national teams hold silver medals in the World and European championships. Now it is time to take our federation and sport to the next level and go for gold.”
Included in Turkish basketball’s development plans is the construction of a new basketball development centre. The facility will be available for national and league teams from Turkey and the region and will provide state of the art training facilities and performance enhancement services such as conditioning, nutrition, sports medicine and psychology.
Patrick Baumann, FIBA secretary-general added: “I believe that good leadership within the TBF, the hosting of major events including the FIBA World Championship and strong governmental support have all combined to raise the profile of the sport, the number of players and, as a result the level of Turkish Basketball. The TBF is definitely a great example for others to follow.”.
