Major Events Summit 2018: Report

The 2018 Summit was held in Liverpool at the Exhibition Center, as part of the International Business Festival (IBF). The Festival aimed to arm businesses with the tools and knowledge to help their businesses thrive - and build new relations between commercial companies and “buyers”. Our aim was to continue this and introduce expert international suppliers to host cities and organising committees.

This 4th edition of the Summit focussed on, not only UK markets, but international markets as well: Japan, China, Qatar, Australia, Peru; Brazil and many European countries. Once again, companies spent time focusing on the key sectors for all sports events: Overlay, Fan Engagement, Event Services and Safety & Security with workshops and discussion panels provoking some lively debate.

The Summit content began with a visionary and moving overview by the CEO of the Invictus Games in Sydney. Other presentations over the 2 days included CEOs or key staff covering: Cricket World Cup England & Wales 2019; Para & Pan American Games Lima 2019; Netball World Cup England 2019, Tokyo 2020, Rugby League World Cup 2021, Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games, Paris 2024 and legacy reflections from the Gold Coast Commonwealth Games 2018, Interpol Project Stadia, World Rallycross and an overview of Qatar. An opportunity to hear their vision and plans, thoughts on procurement and how suppliers can add value were much appreciated.

The meet-the-buyer elements of the programme allowed a good exchange of experience and discussion on trends in the market with the enduring themes on how to take risk out of Games delivery and anticipate the future opportunities and challenges when hosting mega events.

The setting was perfect for what is now an established part of the Summit, “capability stands”. This has proven to be very successful as it generates more conversation and is an ideal way of international visitors getting a feel for a wide range of skills amongst attendees.

Another part of the programme is the chance to meet, relax and build relationships at the Major Events Awards Dinner which was held at the amazing Anfield stadium - home to Liverpool Football Club. Many congratulations to all the winners; Beyond 90; The Appointment Group; Krowdthink; GL Events UK; RD Health and Safety; C6(n); Vianden Group; Capture the Event; Event Production Show; Trade and Investment Queensland; Air Partner and Max WiFi.

We are grateful to Steve Rotheram, the Metro Mayor of the Liverpool City Region for making some welcome remarks and Jamie Carragher, the former Liverpool captain and England International for coming to mix with the delegation. Also, thanks to Wyn Fanshawe of Capture the Event for the VIP photographic commemorative gifts which were well received.

Given the Commonwealth Games are heading to Birmingham in 4 years, we’re keen to host our Major Events Summit in this growing sport city. As we head to the 5th edition in 2019, the model continues to adapt but with the fundamentals remaining the same and in a proven format which seeks to help every delegate regardless of their role.
