The Rio 2016 Organising Committee for the Olympic and Paralympic Games has announced the appointment of Marco Aurélio Costa Vieira as its new Chief Operating Officer [COO].
Reporting to Rio 2016 Chief Executive Officer, Leonardo Gryner, Costa Vieira will lead Rio 2016’s Operations Department, and have responsibility for a number of key areas, including National Olympic Committee and National Paralympic Committee relations, the Olympic and Paralympic Village, venues, the Opening and Closing Ceremonies, Games services, accommodation, transport, security, and technology.
Costa Vieira has joined the Rio 2016 delegation in London for the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games as part of the IOC’s Observer Programme. He replaces Roderlei Generali who was asked to leave the local organising team in late-June 2012.
