LS Events Discuss Ways to Embrace Equity in Celebration of International Women’s Day 2023

10th March 2023

This month LS Events has been reflecting on the theme of equity in celebration of International Women’s Day which took place on March 8th. As industry leaders it is so important for us to look at ways we can support equity at our events and within our organisations.

A focus on gender equity needs to be part of every society's DNA. And it's critical to understand the difference between equity and equality. The aim of the IWD 2023 #EmbraceEquity campaign theme is to get the world talking about Why equal opportunities aren't enough. People start from different places, so true inclusion and belonging require equitable action. Each one of us can actively support and embrace equity within our own sphere of influence.

Here we share some of the ways our team is embracing equity at our events which include American Express presents BST Hyde Park, Luno presents All Points East and the ABB FIA Formula E World Championship.

Level-up Mentoring

LS Events Senior Project Manager Laura Armstrong is leading the industry towards a more equitable future through her mentoring work with the Network Of Women In Events (NOWIE) and by embracing diversity and inclusion as key themes within her event planning strategy in 2023. A vocal advocate for women supporting women, Laura champions representation at all levels believing that encouraging others to be the best version of themselves is the way forward when it comes to enabling equity.

Laura comments “NOWIE is an amazing space both online and when you attend the meetings. The networking is so valuable and it's important to try and think of solution based ways to get better representation for women in the events industry. Diversity and inclusion are such important issues to embrace. Broadening the voices we hear and the stories we listen to as part of a process of self-education, challenge and development to enable us to get closer to the issues of inclusivity and diversity. This is key to informing our understanding how these issues impact our events, the people who attend them and the talent we attract to work at them.”

Make a Pledge

Mel Archer is Event Operations Manager at LS Events and our nominated ‘Night Safety Champion’ within the business. Tasked with the activation and management of welfare initiatives across our events, Mel’s involvement with the Women’s Night Safety Charter has been instrumental in helping LS to deliver innovation against the pledges we have made as part of London’s commitment to the UN Women Safe Cities and Safe Public Spaces global initiative.

Mel comments; “I genuinely care about the wellbeing of others, and I am proud that LS Events are advocating such an important initiative and I look forward to representing us at the Women’s Night Summit Charter in March. It’s my goal to develop strategies to keep everyone safe at our events which drives a permanent  change in attitude and behaviour in the wider community.”

Embrace Change and Collaboration

Beth Smith is Senior Projects Manager at LS Events and represents American Express presents BST Hyde Park and Luno presents All Points East in the Metropolitan Police Service Silver Festivals cross-company forum. A passionate advocate for collaboration and sharing best practice, Beth is a brilliant example of the new generation of event professionals who embrace equity across all aspects of their event organisation.

Beth comments; “Gender neutrality is an area we are looking to develop further having experienced a successful roll-out of non-gendered signage at American Express presents @bsthydepark in 2022. I would like to see more organisations embracing equity in the workplace. I am very lucky to work for a company that celebrates and champions its female employees proving that gender is no barrier for delivering event excellence.”

For International Women's Day and beyond, let's all fully #EmbraceEquity. Equity isn't just a nice-to-have, it's a must-have.
