A MESSAGE FROM CRAIG - It’s All in the Planning

For the 34 years that Paul and I (the Lovett Brothers) have been in the events game, part of our “secret sauce” has always been our commitment to developing strategic operational delivery plans for the events that we service.  There is no doubt that some of the disciplines of planning that I was taught  whilst serving in the Royal Australian Airforce (RAAF) back in the early 80’s has become part of the DNA of our business.  The challenge now, during this time of pandemic on a global scale, is what do we plan for?

The annual Melbourne Cup Carnival is a great example.  Hosted at the majestic centre of horse racing, the VRC Flemington racetrack, the Melbourne Cup Carnival normally sees over 350,000 guests attend the event over four racing days, including the world-famous Melbourne Cup on the first Tuesday of November.  Normally we would plan for a deployment of circa 800 people. The process of recruitment engagement, onboarding, induction and training, and then ultimate deployment and the planning process happens in June each year.  So, what about this year’s event?

Whilst there is no doubt that the size of this year’s Melbourne Cup will be different to those of the past, the question is how different?  As with everything at this strange time in the events world globally, every couple of days often sees a shift in thought.  Some days there are minor shifts…. other days the movement is seismic.

For Incognitus to be an effective partner to the VRC Flemington, we must be ready to play our part.  We must be ready to assist whenever and wherever we can. Whilst the size of the required workforce on our VRC Spring Racing Carnival team may be smaller, the skill set and capability assets are still required.  Without prior planning, our commitment to recruitment (albeit we have no idea of the crew size) will not fail and our 34th Melbourne Cup Carnival in succession will be presented in its regular pristine condition.

Commencing next week, we will continue our proven recruitment program and continue to build a workforce on the back of every piece of information that we can gain.  We will reach out to those who have deployed with us in prior years, those who are engaged on a week in, week out basis and ensure that the catalyst of our engaged team is outstanding.

In 2019, we recruited and deployed our fantastic, energetic crew of circa 800 people without a single advertisement.  That’s what great planning delivers, and we intend to ensure that the 2020 SRC is exactly the same.
