Sotic Elevate In-Venue Experience at the 2023 Sailing World Championships

28th July 2023

Sotic have once again made a significant impact in the realm of in-venue sports tech, providing live Competition Status board displays for the highly anticipated 2023 Sailing World Championships in the Hague, organised by World Sailing.

These cutting-edge displays feature a state-of-the-art NuxtJS-based application; designed to enhance the overall experience for competitors, race officials and journalists, the application offers valuable information about race schedules, cancellations, course details, and protests.

Strategically placed monitors throughout the competition venue ensure vital data is accessible and easy to interpret. To ensure real-time accuracy, the application processes and displays status updates delivered by the championship's official timing partners.

If you've ever found yourself in an airport waiting lounge, closely monitoring electronic displays for arrival and departure information, this application will feel familiar. It uses pagination to ensure comprehensive coverage and swift transitions, guaranteeing updates are readily available in real-time.

Versatility is of utmost importance to the championship's organisers. Different venues utilise different monitors, often varying in screen size and resolution. Consequently, the application has been meticulously designed to perform optimally across all devices. Additionally, it boasts a built-in warning system that activates in the unlikely event of a connection loss with its data source. This feature ensures that the display retains the last accessed information until the connection is restored.

This innovative technology has also been successfully implemented on the World Sailing 2023 World Championships website (https://thehague2023.sailing.org/). Specifically, it enhances the Noticeboard page, enabling competitors on the move, and fans from around the globe, to stay up to date with schedule updates via their mobile devices. This tech will be showcased once again at the 2024 Paris Olympic Games, playing a pivotal role in providing sailors, officials, and racing teams with essential schedule updates for the Olympic Sailing Regatta.

Sotic's Head of Operations, Roly Mercer, said: 'we're delighted to implement this technology for World Sailing, and excited to be working with them on both the Hague World Championships, and for the fifth time, the Olympic Games.

'Our engineering teams, well-versed in complex data processing, have excelled in engineering the delivery of data to the Competition Status Board. This new application will prove indispensable for competing athletes, allowing them to effortlessly access crucial official schedule updates within the venue, eliminating reliance on potentially inaccurate or unreliable sources.

'The application itself showcases the versatility of Sotic’s Headless framework, in this instance, enabling the delivery of data to both a website and a standalone application simultaneously, serving different purposes and user needs and supporting diverse user journeys.’

Sotic have been World Sailing’s trusted digital partner since 2007, consistently delivering live data to their website. Over the years, Sotic have garnered extensive experience in supporting live-scoring and timing integrations for various sports, including football, rugby-union, rugby league, cycling, motorsport (rally), and golf, amongst others. Sotic have worked for two decades on venue-based application technology, delivering applications such as big-screen scoreboard for cricket, capable of seamlessly integrating data from scoring applications used in the English County Championship, T20, and One-Day competitions.
